Tiger is PGA Player of the Year

After winning five tourneys this year, the PGA has given Tiger Woods the Player of the Year award. This is the 11th time that the current world's number one golfer has won the award which is determined by the votes of other fellow PGA golfers. Two other golfers who have been discussed as contenders for the award were Adam Scott and Phil Mickelson, both having won a major title this year.

Although many golfing fans might point out another major-less campaign, it's a great end for a successful year for Tiger. As mentioned, he was able to take the top seed of the world ranking. He also pocketed the most money  from tournaments this year. Here is what this year's Player of the Year had to say as he received the award:

It's just been a fantastic year all around. It's also an incredible feeling to be voted by your peers, and to have the that type of respect is very humbling.
I've had to work my way back from injuries on numerous occasions throughout the years. These last couple years is no exception to that. There were a lot of people saying I could never win again, and two years later I've got eight wins on our TOUR. I'm very proud of where I've come from, from being ranked outside the top 50 to being ranked where I am now, and to have had the success that I've had this year makes it all the more rewarding.

Salary Cap in Sports

If you're into basketball online betting for NBA games, you probably know about the salary cap and how it forces teams to be smarter in maneuvering its roster and such. If you're into betting sports soccer, you probably don't care about it since the biggest soccer leagues don't have a salary cap in place. To be brief, a salary cap limits the amount of money a team can spend for its roster.

Now, the fact that some sports leagues have salary caps while others don't begs the question of whether it is truly needed by leagues who have decided to apply it. After all, some of the oldest sports leagues don't have it and yet they are doing wonderfully.

Promoting balanced competition

Having a salary cap in place has many benefits. However, as we are talking from a fan's perspective here, let's  focus on the benefit that us fans value the most. And that is competitiveness. Without salary cap, the teams with the most money becomes one of the most successful. You can see this in soccer leagues such as La Liga and the English Premier League wherein teams like Barcelona, Real Madrid or Manchester United are the biggest spenders and have dominated and low-spending teams have been in the cellar since forever.

Now look at the NFL wherein the salary cap that was put in place have created a more competitive playing field that allows fans to believe that every season, their teams have a chance to win and thus, the league is thriving.

Birdman Cleared of Charges

online sports betting

Roughly one year ago, Chris Andersen became a target of investigation for having been linked in an internet criminal case that sprouted countless rumors among basketball fans and that also made him a subject of jokes. The investigation during that time was believed to the reason why the Denver Nuggets waived him.

Since not much details were unveiled to the public, the general  internet populace concocted various theories on what the actual charges really were. Since the ones handling the case was the Internet Crimes Against Children Unit of the Douglas County Sheriff's  Office, you can probably understand why pedophilia was the hottest issue. From being nicknamed as Birdman, he pretty much got re-nicknamed as pedobear.

This places the fans of the topic of pedophilia is quite controversial by itself, making it awkward for fans who care about moral compass and such. The guy is fun to watch on the court, but the thought that the guy might have committed something hideous can be off-putting. I know about innocent until guilty and all that, but tell that to the nagging feeling.

Now, if you are a fan of Birdman, you can rejoice and feel free to cheer for him all you want. He was cleared of all charges and the investigations have led to an uncovering of a complicated hoax that duped the basketball player. The statement from his lawyer said that a Canadian woman impersonated Birdman and sought a relationship and gifts from his female acquaintance and vice versa. You can read the complete details here.

Mayweather Beats Alvarez to Stay Undefeated

bet on sports

Coming into the fight, the odds for one of the most anticipated boxing matches this year was in heavily in favor of the Floyd Mayweather Jr. Prior to the fight, the Australian website for betting on sports had the winning lines for the fight 1.36 to 3.15, in favor of Floyd. The 36-year old undefeated fighter is considered to be the best athlete in the sport right now. With his defense and just insanely smart boxing that borders being boring for many, he is like a puzzle without a solution. He won the fight with a majority decision over Saul 'Canelo' Alvarez to protect his undefeated record.

Saturday night in the US, he showed once again why this is so. Canelo had a hard time trying to land punches while Floyd picked his punch and landed clean shots against his opponent time and again. Contrary to the majority decision that makes it sound like the match was close, he was in complete control of the fight.

Some might argue that Canelo won the later rounds. However, all those were rounds that Floyd can afford to lose. Floyd pretty much secured his victory in after round 8, so there is really no reason for him to take a risk. I understand that this is kind of annoying for anyone who wants to see an action-packed match, but that is just how Floyd is. As I mentioned, he is a smart fighter. And on Saturday night, he showed everybody just how clever he is.

The Minnesota Timberwolves in 2013-14

Now that the 2013-14 NBA season is just a few months away and most teams having done their offseason chores of signing, resigning and trading for players, it is easier to look at a team, evaluate the roster and predict how well they will be doing next season. Trades and other transactions can happen along the way that could shake things up, but it is pretty safe to assume that as of this moment, the cores of different teams are all set. That being said, it's time to take a look at the Minnesota Timberwolves.

The team has a roster that is stacked with talent. The team has an all-star power forward in Kevin Love who can rebound quite well and whose range goes beyond the arc. The center position is manned by Nikola Pekovic who is one of the rare big men with a great post-up game these days. There are also some pretty solid players who can fill the small forward position. Chase Budinger and Derrick Williams can both play the position well. The point guard position is secured with Ricky Rubio being the main option and with other quality players on the team like J.J. Barea or Alexey Shved who can fill the role quite well. The team seems to be looking at Kevin Martin as the primary player for the shooting guard. Other guards on the team can fill the shift to the position as well.

The team also has a good wing defender in Corey Brewer. Rookies Shabazz Muhammad and Gorgui Dieng also carry some certain potential. All in all, the Wolves look good going into the upcoming NBA season.

Soccer: USA Qualifies for 2014 World Cup

soccer online betting

After defeating Mexico with a score of 2-0, the USA team only had to wait for the result of the match between Honduras and against Panama for them to find out if they qualify for the World Cup next year in Brazil. It is kind of queer how their fate was tied to a match they weren't playing in. However, the resulting draw between the other match sealed their qualification for the next World Cup.

The two goals for the US came from Eddie Johnson and Landon Donovan and the victory  will allow the team to make their 7th consecutive world cup.

Italy came from behind to defeat Czech Republic and earn a spot at next year's world Cup

The USA isn't the only recent team earning a spot for Brazil next summer. Italy was also able to qualify by defeating Czech Republic with a score of 2-1. Despite what the score might suggest, the Italians actually had a rough time in the match. The Czechs were the first to score and it wasn't after the halftime break that Italy started to roll. Giorgio Chiellini and Mario Balotelli scored the goals for Italy while Libor Kozak scored the sole goal for Czech Republic.

Coach Kidd Now Also an Owner

online sports betting

So here's the news. Jason Kidd isn't just a franchise player and current head coach of the Brooklyn Nets anymore. He now also owns a small part of the team after reportedly buying half of Jay-Z's stake on the franchise. There are several interesting aspects of this development.

I guess he is the boss?

After the Nets signed him as the new coach for the team, many questioned his ability to reel in players and make them follow his vision. This isn't without reason per se. He has no experience in NBA coaching and the fact that he is a friend with some of the players on the team made everyone think of how awkward things can be if he needs to be hard on those players. Basically, it all comes down to respect and command.

Now that he is an owner, he is basically one of the many employers of the team's players. He is their boss, which I think should give him more authority. I'm not certain about how the authority bit will play out though.

What if it doesn't pan out?

And here's another awkward situation. What if him coaching the Nets doesn't pan out? We have seen so many coaches get sacked that it's quite the norm already. However, him being an owner makes it a tricky situation if indeed the team doesn't perform well under his command. I can just imagine how awkward ownership meetings can become.

Player Development Paves the Future for the Spurs

betting on sports

The San Antonio Spurs have been one of the most successful NBA teams for more than a decade now. The franchise has created a system and a culture that allows them to always stay competitive. The way the team is careful in evaluating and adding players to the team is simply impressive, one big reason for their success over the years. There are many cases I could point out to prove the point. Tony Parker and Manu Ginobili are just two of the examples that really stand out.

You could argue that they took a risk and got lucky but you have to admit that the team really has the knack in finding rough gems and letting those gems get polished. And they have different ways with the polishing process.

In cases wherein they are dealing with foreign talent, they don't rush things and bring in the player as soon as possible. Just like with the cases of Manu and Tiago Splitter, the team let them gain more experience that helped them mature through international competitions or foreign league.

However, there is also another case wherein the team brought in an unproven players and forged him under the heat of NBA competition. This is what Parker had to go through as the Spurs who were wanting on the point guard position at that time. In an interview, the point guard mentioned how he would often find himself in tears while taking the shower after games or practices.

Anyways, if you want to bet on sports like basketball and other events you can think of, I suggest creating an account on a website that allows betting on sports legally.
